Good morning from New York where Fortune Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell is preparing this edition of the newsletter. Anyone familiar with Bill Ackman likely holds a strong viewpoint about the prominent investor and his public persona. The outspoken billionaire established Pershing Square as a hedge fund that achieved remarkable successes through strategic investments such as those in Chipotle and Canadian Pacific Railway while also navigating significant setbacks including the situations with Valeant Pharmaceuticals and Herbalife.

During research for the most recent installment of the Fortune 500 Titans and Disruptors of Industry podcast series the qualities Ackman displayed even in his youth stood out as foundational elements that would define his professional trajectory. One prominent trait was his early ambition. While still a teenager he informed his father who provided no allowance and stated there would be no inheritance that he intended to reach millionaire status by the age of thirty possess one hundred million dollars by age forty and attain billionaire standing by age fifty. Ackman managed to achieve each of these targets well ahead of the original timeline he had set for himself.

Upon launching his initial firm Gotham following his time at Harvard Ackman obtained funding through persistent cold calls directed at individuals listed on the Forbes 400 ranking of wealthiest Americans. He explained that when seeking ten million dollars it made sense to approach the richest people globally and request relatively modest sums from each of them. Several of those contacted agreed to participate in the venture.

A second enduring characteristic from Ackman’s formative years is his steadfast conviction in his own positions. A classmate noted in the yearbook that a closed mouth gathers no foot and in subsequent years Ackman has amassed two point seven million followers on the platform X while simultaneously attracting considerable criticism for his outspoken nature. He has expressed strong views on numerous divisive social matters that extend well beyond typical Wall Street concerns. During an appearance on the Lex Fridman podcast several years ago he described his confrontations with individuals including Joe Biden and former Harvard president Claudine Gay noting that his critiques of the president diversity equity and inclusion initiatives and elite universities would inevitably generate opposition.

Ackman appears unconcerned by any resulting negative reactions. He mentioned receiving more expressions of gratitude than criticism in response to his statements. Because he does not face the risk of losing employment he feels free to articulate his thoughts openly and provided an illustration involving financial accounts associated with a political figure suggesting that reluctance based solely on the name would be unwise. In discussions with Ackman he outlined his rationale for recent positions in enterprises including Uber and Meta while also expressing optimism regarding Anthropic and reservations about OpenAI in anticipation of potential initial public offerings. He further elaborated on a more personal investment involving the establishment of a new brain research institute in Manhattan that was motivated by a family health challenge he encountered in recent months.

An additional endeavor close to his heart involves persuading Americans who are increasingly drawn toward socialist ideas amid ongoing affordability challenges to rediscover appreciation for capitalism. He described socialism as fundamentally flawed and suggested that observing the outcomes of certain proposed policies in New York City would reveal their shortcomings. Ackman welcomes disagreement and explicitly encourages others to present counterarguments an approach he applies consistently to his team members and board participants. He emphasized a commitment to pursuing what he considers accurate information and expressed willingness to adjust his stance if presented with compelling evidence to the contrary.
